No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
